Update History

2010 UPDATES

[Accidentally lost some late 2011 updates in an update.]

Aug 28th update completed.  Changes:

  1. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

Jul 9th update completed.  Changes:

  1. BIG NEWS!!  Travis Hedge Coke has written annotations for Warren Ellis' & John Cassaday's Planetary.  As Travis puts it:  "the annotations are panel by panel and the analysis veers away from summarizing the stories and focuses more on the thematic and technical elements of the comic."

  2. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

Jun 6th update completed.  Changes:

  1. Keith Smith hadn't updated his amazing 200 page (!) Eerie Index (Word doc file here) in a while, but the good news is he's finally done it!

  2. Thanks to Sarah Hill, updated a Maurice Sendak link in Eroom Nala's Promethea annotations to replace a now dead one.

  3. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

April 10th update completed.  Changes:

  2. Art  Turner has written a blog titled Deciphering Hob's Hog which is, as he calls it, "an attempt to make sense of the first chapter of Alan Moore's VOICE OF THE FIRE."

  3. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

Feb 28th update completed.  Changes:

  1. NEW!  BIG NEWS!  Gary Greenwood has clearly become THE annotator for DC events.  In the past, he's created some great annotations for DC's universe-changing Infinite Crisis, and then followed them up with annotations for Final Crisis as well as Blackest Night.  Well, as if that wasn't enough (!), he's now started The Annotated DC Project which will eventually hold notes on most if not all of the big DC summer crossover series from years gone by.  For now it has notes on Crisis on Infinite Earths and Zero Hour: Crisis in Time.  Definitely worth checking out.

Feb 26th update completed.  Changes:

  1. Paul Andinach has annotated Alan Moore's Smax #5, ensuring that all of the Smax issues have annotations!

Jan 7th update completed.  Changes:

2009 UPDATES

Oct 31st update completed.  Changes:

  1. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

Aug 16th update completed.  Again, way too long between updates, so there's actually three (!) pieces of big news this time... Changes:

  1. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

  2. BIG NEWS!!  As he did with Infinite Crisis (link) and Final Crisis (link), Gary Greenwood has started annotating DC's next big event, Blackest Night, which you can find here.

  3. BIG NEWS!!  Jess Nevins has, of course, written annotations for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume 3, Chapter 1 (a.k.a. Century 1910).  As with all of his stuff, it's mirrored here on the site.  I also caught the fact that I hadn't mirrored two of his Top Ten: Beyond the Farthest Precinct annotations, so that's fixed as well.

  4. BIG NEWS!!  Paul Andinach has added notations for Supreme, building on Aaron Severson's original annotations.

  5. Updated a broken link relating to Mary Shelley that Sharon (last name withheld) pointed out to me.  Thanks, Sharon.

May 3rd update completed.  Long time between updates... too long!  Changes:

  1. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

  2. Not an annotation or bibliography, but worth noting anyway (especially given the Wolverine movie opened this weekend):  the good folks at the non-profit Sequart Research & Literacy Organization have put out a new book.  Titled  Mutant Cinema: The X-Men Trilogy from Comics to Screen, it examines the history of X-Men comics and how they were adapted and changed for the screen. The book is written by Thomas J. McLean (Variety, Newsarama), a life-long X-Men fan as well as a Hollywood insider.  It is available exclusively from Diamond Comic Distributors and the Previews catalog (order code FEB094600).  Here's a link to Amazon's page on it as well.

Jan 19th update completed.  Changes:

  1. Updated Keith Smith's "index and collector's guide to Eerie Publications" to V1.1.  Updates include more information plus some usability enhancements, including page numbers and a table of contents (helpful given how massive it is).  Check out the word doc here, or the HTML version here (caution:  long load times depending on the speed of your connection).

  2. Added additional links to the Comix-fan website annotations for the DC/Marvel cross-over event JLA/Avengers, issues #1-4, with notes to all the hidden (and not so hidden) references.  Links:  JLA/Avengers #1, JLA/Avengers #2, JLA/Avengers #3, JLA/Avengers #4.

  3. Minor update to a web page address in Richard Arndt's Warren Magazine Interviews.

  4. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

Jan 4th update completed.  Changes:

  1. BIG NEWS!!  Keith Smith has done a massive, incredibly impressive "index and collector's guide" to Eerie Publications.  Just two quick stats for you:  it's 195 pages (!) and 88,836 words.

It includes the index itself plus a brief history of Eerie Publications, a checklist, brief bios of the artists, a listing of other personnel who worked at the company, artist & story cross-indexes, a pre-code index, and (finally) his favorite stories.

This is a seriously impressive piece of work.  Check out the word doc here, or the HTML version here (caution:  long load times depending on the speed of your connection).

  1. Eamonn Clarke has written a set of annotations to the Leviathan by Ian Edginton and D’Israeli.

  2. Eamonn Clarke has also written annotations for the heretofore un-annotated Judgement Day series by Alan Moore.  This marks the THIRTEENTH series of Alan Moore's that has been annotated.

  5. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

  6. While not an annotation... let me put in a plug for Sequart Research & Literacy Organization's Mutant Cinema: The X-Men Trilogy from Comics to Screen.  I think they do a nice job on their site (though I haven't yet had a chance to look at the book).  The book is billed as the "the definitive unauthorized study of the popular movie saga, including:
    • The history of X-Men comic books;
    • Previous adaptations, including early cartoon appearances, the successful 1990s animated series, and initial attempts to bring the mutants to the big screen;
    • The development process for each film, including behind-the-scenes stories, interviews with the screenwriters, and details on omitted scenes and storylines;
    • Detailed scene-by-scene examinations of each film and the comic book stories that infuse every aspect of the movies;
    • Critical and fan receptions of each film, plus box office performances;
    • What the future may hold for the franchise; and
    • Tips on some essential X-Men reading."

Jul 20th update completed.  Changes:

  1. BIG NEWS!!  Eamonn Clarke has written a set of annotations to the three Scarlet Traces graphic novels by Ian Edginton and Matt Brooker aka D’Israeli.  The first volume is a fairly faithful adaptation of The War of the Worlds itself. The second book in the series (although it was published first), Scarlet Traces, is set ten years later in a dramatically altered England and features a murder investigation and some unpleasant events.  The third book is Scarlet Traces: The Great Game which takes the action forward another thirty years to a time when hostilities between the two worlds have resumed.

  1. BIG NEWS!  Great news, bad news, then good news.  Great news:  Mike Carey's first novel has just been published, titled The Devil You Know: A Felix Castor Novel.  480 pages of pure Mike Carey goodness.  The bad news is it's only been published in the UK for now, so anyone in another country won't be able to get it at their local bookstore (in the U.S. it'll probably be over a year, if it follows the classic pattern).  The good news:  that's what Amazon UK is for.  Here's a link to buy the book.

Sanjay Shah and YourMomsBasement.com have started a new column where they break down comic book runs that "usually get passed over".  Their first guide is for the Denny O'Neil & Denys Cowen's volume of The Question (published by DC Comics in 1986).  They break down all 36 issues, citing the creators' influences, here.

Feb 12th update completed.  Changes:

  1. MASSIVE RICHARD ARNDT UPDATE!  The old cliché "When it rains, it pours" really held true this week as Richard Arndt ended up with FIVE updates to his indexes, one of which he'd been waiting for 8 months to get finalized.  You can get them all at the Richard Arndt page.  So, here goes:
    1) Updated the Marvel B&W Horror Magazines index with interviews with Steve Bissette and Tim Conrad,
    2) Updated the Star*Reach index, which now includes a mini-interview with Steve Leialoha,
    3) Updated the Taboo index,
    4) Updated the Warren index, now including Vampirella's #113 issue from Harris Publications, and
    5) Updated the Warren Interviews page with an interview with Don McGregor.
    Also, something pretty cool has come about with a little bit of help from Richard.  As Richard wrote:  "I'm really happy that I got Don & Joe Pruett together 'cause there's going to be new Sabre & Detectives, Inc. stories coming out of it."
    Again, you can get them all at the Richard Arndt page.

  2. Loaded latest updates to all the bibliographies written by Michael Karpas.

Jan 16th update completed.  Changes:

  1. BIG NEWS!  It's always big news when someone new enters the annotation game and takes on a very popular but un-annotated series.  Ido Reif is now that "big news" -- he's begun to annotate Y: the Last Man, an excellent series if you haven't been reading it.  He's already done issues #1-4 -- check it out!

  1. BIG NEWS!  Whenever Jess Nevins does new annotations, it qualifies as big news.  And whenever there are new annotations for an Alan Moore book, it's also big news (as can be seen from the traffic I get to the Alan Moore page).  Well, Jess has done annotations for Alan Moore's Top Ten:  The Forty-Niners and Top Ten:  Beyond the Farthest Precinct, so that's definitely big news.  As always, Jess' annotations are mirrored here with his permission.  You can access them from the Top Ten Index page.
